New way to obtain or receive OT Equipment for daily living
Simple Equipment for Independent Living
Purpose
The information below details the types of equipment that are now available from local retailers, who they are and where they are situated.
There is also some more detailed guidance about how to make use of the retailers, whether you pay for the equipment yourself or receive a ‘prescription’ for the equipment.
A prescription is like a free voucher to exchange for the equipment at one of the retailers.
A prescription is issued after an assessment of need by someone working for (or with) the Council or NHS Southwark.
Introduction
Southwark has been working with retailers in our area to develop a marketplace where simple equipment is much more accessible to everyone.
In the past, Southwark, like many other local authorities, have only issued equipment from a single commissioned provider.
This has made it harder for people to get the simple equipment that could help them in their daily lives.
The retailers provide simple equipment, listed below. More complex equipment, for higher needs, remains available only through the commissioned provider.
What do the Retailers do?
Southwark is working in partnership with several local retailers (as listed below) to provide community equipment to all residents that require it.
You can buy the equipment privately from the retailers. They have trained staff who will be able to advise you. They may refer you to Health and Social Care if your needs are more complex.
All retailers are required to offer a delivery/Install and fit option
What is a Prescription?
If you are eligible for equipment from Southwark, you may be given a Prescription for your equipment. You might think of the Prescription as a "voucher" to exchange for your equipment, free of charge.
If you need to have the equipment delivered or fitted, this will be written on the Prescription and will be arranged by the retailer when you visit or speak to them over the phone.
If you are unable to visit any of the retailers, you may ask a friend, relative or carer to do so on your behalf. They will need to fill out their details on your prescription. All retailers offer home visits to deliver and fit the equipment directly.
You can choose to get an item of a different colour/more features from the retailer and pay the difference in cost. This is called Topping-up.
Once you have received your equipment you may want to let us know whether you are happy with it. Sometimes we need to speak to you to check that you are managing OK, but often we only ask you to contact us if there is a problem.
Who owns the equipment?
Once you have received the equipment from the retailer, the equipment is yours to keep. This also means that when you no longer need the equipment, you may dispose of it how you choose.
What do I do if the equipment breaks down or needs replacing?
Like anything else that you own, if there is a problem with the equipment, you should go back to the place you got it from – in this case, your chosen retailer. If you received a Prescription for the item originally and it needs replacing, you can arrange for this replacement by visiting the retailer or contacting Southwark Customer Service Centre on 0845 6001287.
If you have any other queries, please refer back to your allocated Health/Social Care worker or the team that you were referred to.
